Common questions
How do I calculate the cost of a recipe?+
For each ingredient: (price paid ÷ amount bought) × amount used. Add every ingredient together for the recipe cost, then divide by the number of servings for the cost per serving. The calculator above does all of this, including unit conversion.
How is recipe cost different from food cost %?+
Recipe cost is what the ingredients cost you. Food cost % compares that to the selling price: cost per serving ÷ price × 100. A $0.60 cookie sold for $2.00 has a 30% food cost.
Can I cost a recipe that uses cups but I buy flour by the kg?+
Volume and weight can’t be converted without knowing the ingredient’s density, so buy and use in the same kind of unit (for example kg and g). For flour, weigh a cup once — about 120–130 g — and use grams.
Who uses a recipe cost calculator?+
Home bakers selling cakes and cookies, cafés, food trucks, caterers, meal-prep businesses and independent restaurants — anyone who needs to price food so it makes a profit.
